New Indigenous Childcare Centre – Houston, BC

Opening July 2026

The Dze L K’ant Friendship Centre Society is developing a new Indigenous childcare centre in Houston, British Columbia, designed to support children and families through culturally grounded early learning and care.

The centre will be located at 3553 11th Street, on the traditional territory of the Wet’suwet’en people, with the support of the Laksilyu (Small Frog) Clan. Rooted in respect for the land, culture, and community relationships, the project has been made possible in part through the District of Houston’s long-term land support. The centre is scheduled to open in July 2026.

The new childcare centre will offer 37 licensed, no fee childcare spaces in a safe, welcoming, and culturally affirming environment for:

  • 12 Infant & Toddler (0 to 36 months)
  • 25 School Age (30 months to school age)

The centre has been thoughtfully designed to reflect Indigenous values and community priorities, supporting children’s physical, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive development. Capital and operating funding has been provided by Aboriginal Head Start Association of BC (AHSABC).

AHSABC is a provincial Indigenous organization that delivers community-led early childhood programs rooted in culture and language. These programs give Indigenous children a strong start in life by supporting their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being, while strengthening families and building connections within their communities.
